Now that Memorial Day, summer kickoff, and Fourth of July are over, it’s finally time to find some summertime homeostasis. Personally, after crazy social marathons or holidays I like to get my body back into its natural swing with a good detox. While I have done the whole water fast, juice fast, etc. etc. routine, my favorite detox of all is super simple and requires no fasting.
This detox is a simple green smoothie that I try to drink daily, especially after a big holiday or season of celebrating. I prefer it in the morning on an empty stomach. The benefits are endless! This recipe is extremely high in fiber and contains lots of water to help flush out your system. Ingredients like celery have a low glycemic index to help regulate your blood glucose levels. It also is anti inflammatory and full of tons of vitamins and minerals! Finally, it will help soothe nausea/stomach aches thanks to the lemon and parsley.
Here’s how you make it! This is really an “eyeball-it” recipe, so don’t worry about getting it perfect. Find the proportions that work for you.
Leafy greens such as spichach, kale, chard (I fill my smoothie cup most of the way with greens)
2 sticks of celery
slice of lemon
handful of parsley
How to make it
Start by filling your smoothie cup almost to the top with leafy greens of choice. Pour water over the greens to fill your cup to its “max fill” line. Then blend until smooth (blending the leafy greens first helps break down the smoothie to prevent gross green chunks). Add lemon, celery, and parsley to the smoothie and blend again, adding more water if needed.
As you drink, you may need to add more water and stir in order to drink the last of the mixture… the greens tend to separate at the end.
Drink this every morning (or as often as you can) and feel yourself GLOW from the inside out, baby!
